The Food We Eat

Food is culture. This would have been a typical lunch in the Soviet Union in the 1970's starting with Borscht - soup made with beats which give it it's red color. A part of our culture would have been the Soviet Prime Minister Brezhnev's long speeches about the red flag and the glory of the Soviet Union, young pioneers proclaiming their devotion to their country and dissident songs about lies by Vladimir Vysotsky (an actor and singer whose huge underground popularity kept him out of prison). Some of this cultural nourishment was force-fed and some was readily consumed.
